Tomomi’s Story 2

This dark purple homongi is my favourite kimono that I have bought. It is fairly old, with longer sleeves but I worry that the stitching is getting really weak, so I don’t wear it very much any more. It is yuzen dyed with mirror designs on it, and there is a phoenix on the mirrors….

Tomomi’s Story 1

This flowered tsukesage komon is from my aunt. I like the pink flowers and its my favourite kimono. I loved the way it looked on her, and I kept asking if I could borrow it. In the end she decided that it looked good on me, and as I kept asking for it anyway, she…

Tomomi’s Problems

I think there are lots of problems with kimono life. I tried living and working in kimono, but it wasn’t convenient. I think when it was all tatami mats and sliding doors, it was easier. Its difficult doing vacuuming and wearing a kappogi. My sleeves were always being caught on door handles. In the end…

Tomomi’s Influences

My first influence was the theater. I really like the way the characters look on stage. They are so cool, and inspiring. I wanted to go to the theater in kimono, and that was a big motivation for me. My second influence was the mook that I learned from. It is very cute, I like…

Tomomi (Tokyo)

Tomomi came to Tokyo from Kagoshima in Kyushu, for work, after doing graduate studies in Hiroshima. Her only memories of being dressed in kimono are 7,5,3 and coming of age. She doesn’t remember her family wearing kimono, but her grandmother sewed them. She remembers that when she started to wear kimono, when she was a…

Tamaki’s Story 3

This kimono is the furisode that I wore at my coming of age. I have kept it carefully because my father chose it for me. Usually he did not say much, but he does have an interest in Japanese culture, so he picked it out. I think it is unusual because of the white background…

Tamaki’s Story 2

This is my favourite kimono at the moment. I found it at a used kimono shop. Its omeshi, and I think it was just 3,000 yen. But I love the blue diagonal stripes, so paid to have it washed, resized and sewn back together again, and that ended up being 50,000, so I paid a…

Tamaki’s Story 1

This kimono is very special to me. I wore it for my first meeting with my husband. In those days about half of people were doing love marriages and half were doing arranged ones. I went the traditional way, and had an arranged one. I had been to meet several men before, and this meeting…

Tamaki’s Problems

I think the preparation for wearing kimono and then putting them all away is a little troublesome. I also worry about getting stains on them, because they are not easy to wash. That is perhaps why I have made so many cotton ones now. Cotton is easy to look after. 着物を着る前にいろいろ準備したり、着た後に後始末したりすることが少し面倒に感じます。また、手入れが大変になるのでシミを付けないよう気をつけています。木綿着物をたくさん縫ったのはお手入れが楽だからというのもあります。

Tamaki’s Influences

My biggest influence is [my daughter] Nodoka. I would never have thought of wearing kimono as casual wear, if it wasn’t for her. I wouldn’t have started sewing them, if she hadn’t asked me to either. It has become a shared hobby for us.
