This kimono is very special to me. I wore it for my first meeting with my husband. In those days about half of people were doing love marriages and half were doing arranged ones. I went the traditional way, and had an arranged one. I had been to meet several men before, and this meeting was to be a casual one at the house, rather than a fancy restaurant. This kimono was my mother’s and she chose it for me for the meeting. It is a komon not a very formal kimono. The light green and flowers look cheerful. We met formally twice and then had a date at the movies. After that I had to decide. We met four times in total before we married. I don’t think young people today can imagine that, but it was normal back then.

この着物はとても大切にしています。お見合いの時に着ました。その頃は恋愛結婚とお見合い結婚が約半々で、私はお見合い結婚を選び、何人かの方とお会いしました。この時のお見合いは豪華なレストランではなく、家の中で行われる少し気楽なものでした。この着物は母のもので、母がこの日のために選んでくれました。お見合いの場所に合うよう、振袖や訪問着ではなく、小紋を選びました。黄緑色と花柄が華やかです。私たちはこのような形で２回会った後に、二人で映画館に行きました。その後で結婚するかどうか決める必要がありました。結婚する前、私たちは４回しか会っていません。今の若い人達には考えられないことと思いますが、当時では普通でした。
