This second kimono was originally a dark indigo blue houmongi, which my grandmother had made for her daughter. Her daughter however died in her 30s, and with no other daughters of her own, it passed to my mother. It has a very striking design on it, and my mother decided to have it re-dyed and turn it into a kurotomesode. It was re-dyed black, had an extra lining put in and also had five crests dyed onto it. It is a little different from regular tomesode, because there is some design on the sleeves. I wore this kimono to my daughter’s wedding and felt that although my mother had passed away, she was with me, in the form of the kimono.
